DNS - CNAMES vs MX (23rd Jun 09 at 11:46pm BST)
Why do some companies hate me :(

I seem to always have issues changing DNS settings with some hosts. Namely DonHost and 1and1 (surprise surprise {Tongue Out} )

I've never got on well with 1and1. But what do we expect, nothing new there {Cheesy}

DonHost just seems to act really strange when it comes to pointing the webhosting portion to an external server. At the place I work I have been setting up infrastructure for manging 100s of domains which will have 301 redirections on them. As part of this, I was creating two CNAME records for each domain to affect. These CNAMES would then point both non-www and www versions of the domain name to an external server. This was all working fine until it came up against an account with mailboxes setup on it.

So say we have a setup like:

@ -> CNAME -> my-redirection-server.com
www -> CNAME -> my-redirection-server.com

DonHost thought (for reasons best known to themselves) that any e-mails sent to address@my-domain.com should be delivered to address@my-redirection-server.com

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The MX records were still pointing to DonHost so there's no reason they should have thought this. The only solution that I've found so far has been to remove the CNAME for @. No ideal, but it'll do for now {Unsure}
