Google Apps - Posted By Mole (admin) on 4th Jun 09 at 10:33am
Has anyone else used the Google Apps platform? At the moment I have it running on two domains (and am setting up a third). The space they offer is pretty awesome but it can take quite a bit to get everything verified and setup. Their POP3 settings can be a pain to get right.

I've now setup a third account but had a few problems with it. I fell victim to not checking how the domain registrar handles MX records that point to a 3rd party domain.

Unless the MX record is terminated with a period (.) they append the domain name. So we'd end up with an MX record of

aspmx.l.google.com.my-domain.com

I know 123-Reg do this but (for some reason) didn't think DonHost did. When you consider that they're owned by the same company (Pipex) it kind of makes sense that they'd handle DNS records in the same way.

I guess all this is a learning process. Fortunately I caught it quick enough so no damage was done as mail servers kept retrying the mail until the MX records got fixed.

I'm still going to keep using Google Apps, I'm just writing my own checklist of things to do/check as theirs isn't all that great. Some of their settings don't always work and when copying the MX addresses from their "guide" they don't include the terminating period.
